Alibaba sees record breaking online shopping day
You know, Americans, and the United States in general, take a lot of crap for our focus on consumerism above all else. And yeah some of our products are pretty stupid. Like this. And this. And, sigh, this. (Please watch out on that last one, it is kind of NSFW).
But, even though we buy some really dumb stuff sometimes, what really matter is how much we spend. And in that category the United States doesn't even come close to being number one. No, that distinction goes to that other country; you know, the one we all that money to.
China shopping giant Alibaba saw 35.19 billion yuan, the equivalent to $5.78 billion, in one day, according to a blog post from the company. That is a record for the biggest single day of sales in history.
Even more impressive is how quickly the company got to those sales. In just half a day, Alibaba had already seen over $3.1 billion, which was last year's entire total. That is an increase of a whopping 87% year to year.
Roughly 171.4 million orders were placed on Tmall.com and Taobao Marketplace, Alibaba Group's e-commerce platforms, and 21% of them were for mobile devices. That is an increase of 5% from last year.
The number of unique visitors to the website also doubled to 402 million, while 20,000 merchants, like Gap and Uniqlo, offered discounts.
Compare these number to the biggest shopping day ever in the United States, last year's Cyber Monday, where we spent a mere $1.46 billion. In fact, if you put last year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday together, we still only spent $2.5 billion, less than half of Alibaba's record setting day.
For shame, America. For shame.
I should note that we will probably do a little better this year. A recent report out from Adobe predicted that this year online sales on Thanksgiving with $1.1 billion, an increase of 21% from last year. And Black Friday will see $1.6 billion, up 17% from last year.
Shopping on Cyber Monday, meanwhile, will increase by 15% year year, for to a total of a $2.27 billion spent.
By the way, in case you were wondering, here is some background on why so much money was spent today in China.
For the Chinese, November 11th is known as "Single's Day." It serves as almost an anti-Valentine's Day, in which bachelors get to, you know, celebrate being single.
And its on 11/11. Get it? All singles! It's kind of genius.
The day was apparently invented in the 90s by a bunch of college kids, and has since almost become the equivalent of our Cyber Monday.
I'll be honest with you: I kind of love this idea. I haven't been single for a long time but I have many friends who would relish the chance to rub it in the faces of all the couples out there. online shopping China All of thoe "I hate Valentine's Day" people would finally get their day to shine.
In fact, I'm really surprised that we didn't come up with this one first!

Lenovo profit up 36 percent on smartphone, tablet demand
Lenovo profit up 36 percent on smartphone, tablet demand
Chinese PC maker Lenovo posted a 36 percent year-over-year growth in its net profit in the third quarter, with demand for the company's smartphones and tablets continuing to outpace shipments for its PC products.
For its fiscal second quarter ended Sept. 30, the company's net profit reached US$220 million, an increase from $162 million for the same period a year ago. Revenue was also up 13 percent year-over-year, at $9.8 billion.
Lenovo reported the strong earnings even as demand for PC products has fallen sharply. Shipments for Lenovo PCs barely grew at 2.2 percent year-over-year in the quarter, according to research firm IDC. Rivals including HP, Dell and Acer, reported flat growth or major declines in shipments.
The company is still ranked as the world's largest PC vendor, www.funbookes.com and makes most of its revenue in notebooks. But a growing source of revenue for the company has been tablets and smartphones. For two consecutive quarters, Lenovo's combined shipments of smartphones and tablets crossed those of its PCs. The company's mobile and home products business, which includes smart TVs, now makes up 15 percent of its total revenue.
Also helping the company is its large presence in China, the company's home market where it reigns as the leading PC vendor. The Chinese market accounts for 40 percent of Lenovo's revenue. In addition, most of its smartphones are sold to consumers in the country.
In Online Shopping Smartphones , Lenovo's shipments were up in the quarter 78 percent year-over-year. In tablets, the company shipped a record 2.3 million units, an increase of over 400 percent from the same period a year ago.
More Lenovo tablets are coming to the market. Last month, the company unveiled two of its new Yoga tablets, boasting 18 hours battery life. Both run Android.
During the quarter, Lenovo said its market share for the first time reached double digits in the U.S., taking its share to 10.5 percent, and ranking it fourth in the country, according to IDC.

Rogers releases One Number Smartphone for iOS and Android, makes long distance charges a thing of the past
Rogers releases One Number Smartphone for iOS and Android, makes long distance charges a thing of the past
Now that Rogers has rolled out its Share Everything plans with unlimited nationwide calling, the company felt it was safe to release smartphone versions of its One Number app.
Previously available on the web, iPad and Android tablets, One Number allows users to make and receive calls from their Rogers phone number over data, not voice, networks. This means tablet users can ostensibly make calls to Canadian numbers, and receive calls from any number, when travelling or when service is less than ideal.
Now, Rogers has brought the service to china android smartphones and iPhone, and though the implementation is not exactly Google Voice-like, it essentially eliminates the need for a long distance plan. Using the VoIP implementation of both operating systems, the app sits in the background and allows users to receive calls over data, not voice, networks. Outgoing calls are free to any Canadian number, even if your voice plan does not include long distance, and from my brief tests quality was pretty good; it uses Counterpath’s wide-band audio codec, similar to Skype or Google Hangouts.
The app also allows users to set up Call Forwarding or Ring My Numbers, which forwards calls to a single number or multiple numbers respectively.
The current implementation is a little buggy; Android users are reporting that the app disconnects whenever it is minimized, negating the advantage of accepting VoIP calls in the background. Similarly, I could not get my Rogers number to successfully route through One Number instead of the regular cell network on both iOS and Android.
Once the issues are resolved, One Number China smartphone could prove to be an invaluable tool for Rogers customers, especially those who travel a lot and don’t want to make calls from unidentifiable numbers. The main advantage to One Number over a local SIM or other VoIP solutions is that your own phone number shows up on the other person’s call display, making it seem like you’re calling from home, wherever you may be. Text messaging also possible through the app, and outgoing messages will not count towards your monthly “bucket,” either.
You do already need to have a One Number account to make it work, along with a valid postpaid Rogers account that supports the service. One Number is free to all Rogers users.

China’s smartphone market place will encounter a huge development
China’s smartphone market place will encounter a huge development spurt more than the subsequent 12 months - 1 that bodes well for all handset makers that cater to it, but particularly for Apple.
Investigate business IDC expects Apple’s share in the smartphone market place in China to double from this calendar year into the subsequent. The key reason why: The debut in the company’s hottest iPhones and the predicted signing of the long-rumored cope with China Cellular, the country’s largest mobile provider, with its 700 million subscribers.
As I have mentioned prior to, China smartphone could be the greatest wireless provider on the planet and, therefore, one particular from the handful of remaining carriers which will really shift the needle on apple iphone product sales.
Around one hundred eighty million Online Shopping Smartphones utilize the company’s 3G network, and, according to ISI analyst Brian Marshall, that’s an honest proxy for examining the new addressable marketplace that a handle the provider would carry to Apple. Claimed Marshall, “In our view, this likely subscriber foundation could at some point be practically as massive (in device terms) as being the option from AT&T and Verizon in the U.S. combined.”
Hardly a surprise, then, that IDC has concluded that adding China Mobile as a carrier might double Apple’s apple iphone profits in China within a yr. The only question that remains now is when Apple and China Mobile will announce the deal. Soon, perhaps. As All Things reported earlier this month, China’s Telecom Equipment Certification Center has issued a network-access license for a handset resembling the apple iphone that runs on China smartphone ’s community, and Apple is stated to be preparing to ship iPhones into the carrier.
